The hot springs are known in Turkey since ancient times. Water flowing down the slopes of the mountain forms a cascade of reservoirs with bizarre limestone walls. Dazzling white terraces (travertine formation) appeared on the hillside as a result of salt deposits from saturated calcium sources. In 1988, Pamukkale and the ruins of Hierapolis are included in the UNESCO World Heritage List.
